Chatham Rotary Foundation Secures $201,350 Grant to Advance Reimagine Chatham Projects in 2026
The Chatham Rotary Foundation is pleased to announce that it has received a $201,350 grant from a local Trust to continue advancing the community projects launched over the past two years through the Reimagine Chatham initiative.
The grant supports three project areas that began in 2025 and are now ready to move into the next phase of implementation. Planned improvements include the initial build-out of a local walking path and trail system, continued support for local business development and deployment of the town’s newly developed brand, and installation of themed murals in prominent locations.
Special thanks go to Richard Camp, Reimagine Chatham Co-Chair, for his diligent work in drafting and advancing the grant request.
The Reimagine Chatham Steering Committee is now organizing working groups to help guide each of these initiatives. As in past phases of the initiative, this work will continue to rely on a collaborative approach involving civic organizations, local businesses, private schools, and the Town of Chatham. Fiscal oversight will be provided by the Chatham Rotary Foundation, with River District Consulting Group offering support as needed.
The Chatham Rotary Foundation is deeply appreciative of the Trust’s continued confidence in its fiscal management and support for the work of Reimagine Chatham and its many volunteers and partners. The Foundation remains committed to being a responsible steward of these funds and to advancing improvements that benefit the entire community.

Reimagine Chatham Consultant Releases Final Branding Study
On October 8, 2025, the consulting firm of Arnette Muldrow and Associates presented the final results of their study to develop and deploy a brand that will help define the identity of Chatham and the adjacent area. The branding effort is the culmination of over six months of work, funded by a grant obtained by the Chatham Rotary Foundation and administered by Reimagine Chatham.
The most obvious feature of the study will be a set of primary logos and tag line, augmented by variations on the theme, that can be used by local civic groups, businesses, and the town in promoting the area and its events and to aid in marketing the assets and attractions of the local area. Much more than simply logos, the branding plan defines colors, fonts, and various adaptions of the theme to add versatility while maintaining a standard that is consistent across various uses.
The brand was developed only after extensive local input in the form of public meetings, stakeholder discussions, and an on-line survey. This input shaped the parameters that led to the selection of the color pallet, the fonts, the theme, and the “tag line”. The objective was to capture as much of the local character as possible. The consultants indicated that Chatham presented an interesting challenge because of the variety of local assets. Items such as history, architectural diversity, natural beauty and the two local boarding schools helped define the uniqueness of the town and adjacent area, and the consultants endeavored to distill this, as best possible, into the visual and graphical information that is used within the brand and associated logos. The final product also included a prioritized implementation guide for deploying the marketing the brand in the short, mid, and long term.
Widespread use of the brand and logos will be encouraged. This will allow items like the town seal and civic club logos to be modified, if desired, to fit the branding guidelines. The brand guidance and materials can also be used in promotions of businesses and area events. An example of this is shown in the graphic of the recent promotional banner for the October “Buzzard Fest” festival in town. However, before full deployment can be made, some structure to manage and guide the process will be established.
The following graphics show the primary logo(s) and some examples of variations. The primary logo features two structures similar to local churches, the court house, and private school administrative buildings. It contains an oak tree from the town seal with a heart in the center silhouetted by a rising sun. The tagline of “Just Imagine” was chosen to remind us of the possibilities that exist in our community and can be adapted for many other uses as shown in the final report. Once some structure is put in place to begin deploying the plan, the report will be available on-line at ReimagineChatham.org.

Join Us for the Unveiling of a New Brand for Chatham
The Reimagine Chatham initiative invites everyone who lives in, works in, or simply loves the Chatham area to attend a public presentation of the community’s new brand on Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 PM at the Pittsylvania County History Research Center and Library, located at 340 Whitehead Street in Chatham.
Branding consultants from Arnett Muldrow & Associates will present the newly developed brand and logo, created to reflect the identity, values, and vision of the broader Chatham community, from the Town itself to the neighborhoods, rural areas, and organizations that define this region.
The presentation will include the new logo, color palette, tagline, and messaging, all shaped through community input gathered over the past several months. This work is part of a larger effort to promote Chatham as a welcoming place to live, visit, invest, and grow.
“This is not just a logo for the Town,” said organizers. “It’s a brand for the entire Chatham community—a shared invitation to help shape the future of this place we all care about.”
The presentation is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to attend—residents, students, visitors, business owners, or anyone who feels connected to the Chatham area.

Reimagine Chatham’s Local Improvement Initiatives Continue
The summer of 2025 is seeing the completion of several of the initiatives begun under the 2024 Reimagine Chatham Growth and Renewal Strategic Plan. Accomplished with funding from a local Trust and completed last November, the plan has defined a vision for betterments in Chatham and the adjacent area and is being used as the basis for several current projects.
This “implementation phase” of the strategic plan is underway and is being driven primarily by grant funds. As was the case with the plan’s development, the work is being accomplished by a collaborative effort among local civic and service groups and the Town of Chatham. Projects are guided by a steering committee and are being managed with assistance of the local firm River District Consulting. Fiscal oversight is by the Chatham Rotary Foundation, the grant applicant.
Specifically, the summer will see the completion of a feasibility study for a series or walking trails in and around town, the completion of pickleball courts at Harris Field, and a study to define a local brand and marketing strategy. Reimagine Chatham is also partnering with the town to help improve the appearance of the town entrance at Highway 57 West and with paving at Silas Moore Park. Further, Chatham Rotary, a member of the steering committee, is working to add playground equipment at Harris Field.
The trail system will include both existing sidewalks and natural sections made available by the support of Chatham Hall and Hargrave Military Academy, which have offered access to certain existing trails and paths on their respective campuses. The trails will link points of historic and aesthetic interest. Future efforts will focus on development of directional and interpretive signage, improvement of some natural sections, and the development of some new small park areas and trailheads. The feasibility report is available for viewing at ReimagineChatham.org.
The pickleball courts are scheduled to be completed in early August. The facility will include two courts with netting and fencing.
Work has begun on improvements at the railway underpass on 57 West with the clearing of the overgrown railroad embankment slopes. Landscaping and other aesthetic improvements are being planned.
Late August will see the completion of the branding study and marketing plan. Though not as visible as the other initiatives, the branding and marketing plan may be the most consequential for the long-term growth of the town. The study is being conducted by the firm of Arnett Muldrow and Associates of Greenville, South Carolina. They have developed many similar plans throughout the region. Branding will include a primary logo for the town, as well as logo variants that can be used for purposes such as signage, specific events, advertising, business promotions, and any other activity identified with the town. Also included will be a “tag line” or slogan, and recommendations for colors and fonts to provide overall compatibility. These resources will be available for use, within guidelines, by businesses, civic groups, and others for events that publicize and promote Chatham and the adjacent area. The marketing plan will be a tool containing ideas and initiatives for improving the local business environment.
All these projects will require further investments of time and resources to maximize their potential for improving our town. Reimagine Chatham will be helping lead efforts to put in place the structure and processes to continue to move these and other betterments forward. You can stay up to date by following Reimagine Chatham on Facebook and signing up for email bulletins at ReimagineChatham.org. By staying informed, you will have the opportunity to shape future projects that have an impact on our town.

Reimagine Chatham Receives Grant for Community Projects

Since completion of the area growth and renewal strategic plan in early October, Reimagine Chatham has turned its attention to “Phase 2”, a process for implementing recommendations contained in the plan’s vision for community improvements. A new steering committee, consisting of representatives from civic groups, the town, local businesses, and service organizations, has been formed to work on this phase. Unlike the first phase, the effort will not be totally led by volunteers. Given the amount of work required, the group will be led by a firm that can routinely devote time to planning, prioritizing, and coordinating the effort. An interim contract has been drawn up with a Chatham company, River District Consulting. They will be supported by the organizations represented on the steering committee.
This week, the group announced a major milestone in moving ahead with the community improvement initiatives. A local Trust awarded Reimagine Chatham a grant in the amount of $146,450 to begin work on a variety of high-priority study recommendations.
The funding will allow work to begin on a feasibility study for a designated walking trail, help develop a town “brand” that can be used for marketing and public relations, help fund the management of the effort, and provide funds to assist the town in a number of areas, pending council approval. The town projects include improvements at Silas Moore Park, Harris Field, and clean-up and beautification of the town entry point on Highway 57 West. Funds also will support revisions to the town’s historic district, pending the results of an ongoing feasibility study.
Area residents should begin seeing the results of these efforts in early 2025. Work under the grant funding is to be completed by September 1, 2025.
Those who are not presently signed up for routine progress updates can go to ReimagineChatham.org and register for email updates as the work proceeds.
Chatham Veterans Day Parade

This old photo from about 1918 shows young women from what would become Chatham Hall making donations to the war effort during WW1. The war would end in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month with the signing of an armistice agreement between the victorious allies and Germany and their alliance members. The day would be commemorated as Armistice Day. We now know the holiday as Veterans Day and it is celebrated with parades and other ceremonies honoring those who have served our country.
Chatham will join in the observances this year. Please come honor our vets by attending this year’s parade on Monday, November 11, at 11 am, along North Main Street between Hurt Street and the Courthouse. As in 1918, our local schools (including Chatham High School, Hargrave Military Academy, and Chatham Hall) will be participating.
Chatham Fall Festival
Hey Reimagine Chatham followers, many of you responded to the online survey saying you wanted more local festivals. You asked for it, and here is one brought to you by the good folks at Chatham First. Share this, spread the word, and come out for a fun event.

Reimagine Chatham Growth and Renewal Strategic Plan Final Draft
Attached is the final draft of the Reimagine Chatham Growth and Renewal Strategic Plan. This document is the culmination of efforts that began in the summer of 2023. The effort, branded Reimagine Chatham, is documented on the website ReimagineChatham.org.
This plan will serve as the basis for town planning and future grant applications that will unlock sustained funding for local improvements. Future postings on this bulletin will now switch to focus on efforts to implement the plan. Keep following Reimagine Chatham, as exciting developments are coming.
Already, a study has begun to determine the feasibility of expanding the town historic district. Historic District structures are eligible for tax credits for development and improvements. The Chatham Lofts were built largely by historic district tax credits.
This plan reflects the desires of the community as expressed through public meetings and surveys. The process invited public involvement and over 450 responses were received in response to various outreach initiatives, including a mass mailout of information to over 4,000 local addresses. This plan is your plan, you helped shape it.
Stay tuned to this site (ReimagineChatham.org) for information in the coming weeks and months.
