Chatham, VA – August 2026: Toward the end of 2025, Chatham First and the Chatham Rotary Foundation, working under the Reimagine Chatham Initiative, received a grant from a local Trust to begin building out local initiatives proposed under the Town’s previously adopted Growth and Renewal Strategic Plan. (Previously, the Trust had funded local improvements that resulted in the pickleball courts at Harris Field and helped pave the parking lot at Silas Moore Park.)
Continuing with implementation of the plan, by the beginning of 2026 contracts had been awarded to develop a feasibility study for a series of local walking trails and for a branding and marketing study. Both studies were completed by the spring of 2026. The branding study, now adopted by the Town, proposed initiatives to market the community and included logos and other criteria to provide consistency in the marketing efforts by the town, civic groups, and businesses. Plans for the trails were also influenced by the branding, and contracts were issued to design and locate signs delineating the trails throughout the system. The trails being developed include both existing walks and nature sections. The latter are made available by the cooperation of Hargrave Military Academy and Chatham Hall. Murals were part of the plan as well, with Town mural guidelines being developed, ideas solicited from local artists through Chatham First, and further design guidance being drawn from the branding plan.
Now, in late summer, all the pieces are coming into place, and the community will soon be seeing tangible results from two years of study and planning.
A committee is guiding the trail build-out. This effort which has benefited from volunteer support, from Hargrave, Chatham Hall, and Chatham High School students, specifically the football team. The first nature walk section is taking shape on Hargrave property, and a trailhead and parking area are being constructed on the north end of town across from Gilbert’s Restaurant. It is hoped that if the historic landmark is restored, the trailhead might be developed into a small park. Also, final design of brand-compliant signage for the trails is taking shape. A contract should be awarded by mid-September to procure the signs. Once the signs are available, the sidewalk sections of the walking trails will be defined and trail marking installed. Thanks to volunteer support from Chatham Hall students and faculty, the nature trails on Chatham Hall property are largely complete, with the next step being to connect the Chatham Hall trails to the Town’s trail system.
Chatham First is working to help deploy the brand as part of the effort. They are also managing the design and painting of several murals intown. The first mural will soon be going into place on the south wall of the El Cazador Restaurant at Main and Pruden Streets. The Town is planning a mural on the Highway 57 underpass as part of improving that entrance to town. A mural on the other side of the underpass is under consideration as well. Several building owners have expressed interest in having a mural on their wall, and plans are being made to possibly undertake another mural this year and perhaps two more in 2027.
All these initiatives, each driven by civic organizations and volunteers, supported by town leadership, and funded by community-minded foundations and trusts, are aimed at improving the quality of life and environment in Chatham and the surrounding area. Teamwork and a common purpose have been the key element of success thus far and provide hope for more betterments in the coming years.
